Five years after her 2014 single “Black Rage (Sketch),” the former member of Fugees, Lauryn Hill, is releasing new music which sets to release next month as part of the soundtrack for Queen & Slim.
Although this is her first solo song in five years, Hill made her return back in August as a guest feature on Pusha-T single, ‘Coming Home.’
The upcoming film, Queen & Slim, is a feature-length debut of “Formation” and “We Found Love” music video director Melina Matsoukas. The feature film will have new music from artists like Vince Staples featuring 6lack X Mereba, Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Baby, and others. Also including previously released songs from Blood Orange, Bilal, Mike Jones, Roy Ayers, and many more.
Director Matsoukas said she wanted the sound of the project to reflect the progression of Black music, stating via press release:
“I wanted the soundtrack for Queen & Slim to showcase the historical evolution of Black music, from its roots in blues and soul to modern bounce, hip hop, and R&B — much like we used to see in film soundtracks in the ’90s. We partnered with Motown because of their legacy within Black music. I am honored to have worked beside Ethiopia and cannot wait for audiences to hear what each artist has created.”
The soundtrack is set to release next month, November 15., on Motown Records. The movie hits theaters on November 27.
