Currently leading the Billboard Hot 100, “Rockstar” the new hit of Post Malone & 21 Savage has reached the top of the top. The new music video has been released a day ago and it already has more than two millions and a half views. Be warned: The video clip is brutal, slice-and-dice affair (the “parental advisory and viewer warning” at the top is a giveaway).
Directed by Emil Nava, in the video clip Post Malone dressed in a white suit shows off his samurai skills while he slices-up some dudes with black tuxedos. Savage is there too, but he doesn’t spill as much blood as Post Malone does. The clip ends with both rappers covered in blood. Then, snow falls around Post Malone—an apparent homage to the classic 1973 film Lady Snowblood. Watch it all happen below.
The song is both Post Malone’s and 21 Savage’s first No. 1 single, and arrived at the top after spending three weeks in the No. 2 spot. The strongest support for the song came from streaming platforms, and as Billboard reported, this week was the song’s “third (nonconsecutive) week at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart with 51.3 million U.S. streams.”
That said, few months before releasing the video, Post’s label Republic Records uploaded a similar version of the song that features the chorus on a loop for 3:38, which is the same amount of time as the full song. The video doesn’t feature any of the song’s verses or 21 Savage’s guest verse either. In the video’s bio, there’s a link that sends viewers to the streaming service of their choice to listen to the full song. The looped clip has over 41 million views. Some people are saying that this was planned ahead to boost the song’s popularity and climb its way to the Top Billboard Hot 100, and some are saying that it’s just a well-executed marketing plan.
“Rockstar” made it to the top of Billboard chart and this success is definitely derived from the two performers’ talent ‘Post Malone & Savage 21’, whether with the hacked strategy or without, the song is still a killer because it’s No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
