Drake continues to treat fans this year by releasing ‘Care Package’, a project he announced with a single Instagram post the night of the drop.
And while most might not see the hype behind a bunch of SoundCloud loosies or, my personal favorite right now, “reheated material”, there’s a lot under the surface that makes the timing of this compilation special.
While some say that Drake isn’t an artist known for his “timeless” music, his material has always been like a mark of the times in a way. What makes ‘Care Package’ so special is how these songs genuinely take you back.; these aren’t just some of Drake’s best moments, these feel like true moments in time.
Tracks like ‘Dreams Money Can Buy’ is a ‘Take Care’-era Drake track that still stands as one of the Canadian MC’s best & most vulnerable moments. ‘Draft Day’ is as triumphant & infectious as it was when released back in 2014. ‘I Get Lonely’, ‘Jodeci Freestyle’, and “Heat Of The Moment are songs you used to have to dig for just to recapture that essence of “throwback Drake”.
One thing to note is how much growth (and in some cases a regress) of how far Drake’s music has come. Some of the material on this record are some of Drake’s standout performances, from the wordplay of ‘4PM In Calabasas’ to the infectious melodies on a song like ‘The Motion’. The versatility displayed throughout this project is definitely something worth highlighting.
‘Care Package’ in itself only range from “Take Care” to “VIEWS”, but just as you can vaguely remember a time when these songs were constantly in rotation, it’s an even bigger joy to remember those times in our personal lives. Whether it’s a reflection of growth or a reflection of better days, this project is a breath of fresh air with a nostalgic feel.
You can stream ‘Care Package’ now on all music streamers.
