The season may be over but the excitement in the NBA continues into the summer. From big draft moves to contract extensions and a whole lot of movement between teams the stakes for new years season are even higher with promise for much more excitement.
The 76ers seem to be cooking up something in Philly. With this year’s #1 pick of Markelle Fultz who joins Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and Jahlil Okafor; the 76ers certainly have the potential to be something special as these young guys mature.
The OKC Thunder also seem to be revamping their roster with the addition of Paul George after losing KD a year ago to this year’s defending champs.
Speaking of the Warriors, they made two big moves by giving Steph Curry a well deserved 5 year, $201 million contract to secure their superstar and also by beefing up their bench by acquiring Nick Young of the Lakers. The Houston Rockets also opened up the checkbook by signing James Harden to a 4 year extension reportedly with $228 million, making this the largest contract extension in NBA history.
With the idea of the Warriors building a “super team” fans can expect to see a lot more trading going on this offseason. Particularly in the east with Lebron looking to get his revenge after this past season upsetting finish.
Another notable pick up was Duke’s small forward Jayson Tatum who was drafted by the Boston Celtics as the 3rd overall pick. Tatum will be a key addition to the team as they have been lacking in firepower forcing Isaiah Thomas to carry a large load.
The offseason is fun because it’ gives every team a chance to put together the best squad in the league. With a combination of rookies, ring-chasing super stars, and the emergence of “super teams” it would seem that the NBA is evolving in a way that should make next season extremely eventful and well worth the wait.
