For years now a big part of the music conversation has been the decline of “traditional” Rnb. With acts like Jill Scott and John Legend being some of the only artists carrying the torch. In 2017 however, Rnb is back with a vengeance. With singers like Daniel Caesar and Kali Uchis giving a fresh new take on the genre, making themselves a part of the conversation. Not to mention the amazing year Sza had with her ” Ctrl” album. If 2017 was the rise of Rnb , 2018 will sure be its reign.
Daniel Caesar one of the new champions of the genre, had a breakout underground hit with ” Get You ” which was followed by a stellar debut, ” Freudian”. Caesar stands as one of the champions of modern day Rnb and takes the opportunity on his album to highlight some of his peers ; Kali Uchis , Syd , H.E.R. and others , make appearances on the album.

Ty Dolla $ign dropped one of his most prolific projects in his career as he took a concerned effort to incorporate less rapping. Much of his earlier work suffered from the fact that it ironically didn’t showcase enough of his actual singing abilities. This album did great to include classic sounds from the genre. In doing so he may have released his best project to date and helped to move Rnb music forward. Check out Beach House 3 below!

For some time much of the popular Rnb music was saturated by auto tune and content that barely spoke about love. Its clear from what 2017 has shown us that Rnb will make an even bigger splash in 2018 and perhaps with new elite artists carrying the torch it’ll be here to stay.
