In light of recent events in Charlottesville, where chilling displays of racism and white supremacy took place, Spotify has attempted to show their stance by removing hate music from streaming services.
The effort only came, however, after Digital Music News found 37 hate bands still on the site, even after becoming aware of the situation in late 2014.
Two and a half years ago, in December of 2014, the Southern Poverty Law Center created a list containing dozens of white supremacist “hate bands”, recommending they be removed from streaming sites, like Spotify, noting that hate music can be more than dangerous.
Many have condemned Spotify for not removing the music sooner, and waiting for a drastic event to be the push for taking it down.
In response, Spotify has created what they call a “Patriotic Passion”playlist. It features several classically denoted “American” songs, as well as many with positive vibes about life and life in this country.
While there are some great hits on the playlist… it might not be a good enough apology for all. Take a listen for yourself!
