From the press of the play button, you’re greeted with Calvin Harris like synths and a steady bass line. Though a lead up for a bass drop isn’t to present the gift of a beat drop that makes any music lover scrunch his or her face is delivered.
From Calvin Harris to Trap Soul, SZA’s new addition to Issa Rae’s “Insecure” soundtrack is nothing less than a hit. Starting the verse saying “should I assume that you didn’t mean it like that…Or should I assume you know exactly how you said it….” Can make any listener, particularly a male one, feel as if they are the one she is singing about. I mean I felt attacked, but with such a distinct captivating voice in combination with a disrespectfully good beat that slaps every time an 808 preludes perfectly placed hi-hats, it’s impossible to change the song.
As the song goes on she shades the relationships of some, (most) dishing out tea on a relationship that was good in the beginning but slowly starts to go down hill. She even hints on a consistent woman to woman phone calls from a mysterious number that she hopes isn’t “her”. She re-confirms with this song that she has been the weekend and the 9-5.
This insecure, relationship gone the wrong song could be an extension of CTRL. Maybe a bonus track. If you haven’t heard this song and fear for flashbacks of a relationship that you hopped into, slowly sank, and the more and more you struggle to get out the deeper you go kind of like I don’t know……”Quick Sand”, I’d still recommend this song.
