Yara Shahidi’s journey to fame doesn’t stop at Black-ish. Grown-ish in the title of the spin-off series that follows Shahidi’s character, Zoey, into her transition into adulthood.
Most of us are all too familiar with the feeling of everyone expecting you to have you life together, but it’s definitely not. Grown-ish is a near reflection of Shahidi’s real life, as she takes a gap year before starting at Harvard in fall 2018.
“Grown-ish reflects what we’ll be dealing with in the show — that in-between place where you’re not quite an adult but facing grown world problems for the first time,” creator Kenya Barris said. “Where Black-ish examines what it means to be black, Grown-ish is an examination of … what it means to be grown.”
Shahidi’s character will be off to her first year of college at Southern California University, but she definitely won’t be alone. Emily Arlook, Chris Parnell, and Trevor Jackson have been cast to star alongside Shahidi.
Fans have a couple months to wait before they embark on this new journey. Grown-ish is set to premiere in early 2018 on the Freeform network for a 13 episode run. However, Black-ish returns October 3 to hold you over until then.
