It was only a matter of time. Growing up in the 90’s, Space Jam was one of my favorite movies to watch. It featured my favorite childhood athlete, Michael Jordan and my favorite cartoon characters from the Looney Tunes universe. As we fast forward to 2018, LeBron James is to the kids of this generation what MJ was for my generation. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Lebron went on record to say ” The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” says James, “It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.” Ryan Coogler is slated to direct the film. Some of Coogler’s notable projects include Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther.
The original Space Jam had cameos from some of the best players on the planet and Hall of Famers of today such as Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Larry Bird among others. And while the plot for the sequel has not been revealed, one must wonder which of today’s NBA stars will be in the film and if the original film’s star, Michael Jordan will be making an appearance. Only time will tell.
The film is scheduled for a Summer 2019 release.
