We all remember April 29, 2018, and watching Catherine Middleton walk down the aisle to Prince William. Her dress shook the world and inspired millions of brides to be. Women all over the world were going to bridal shops and asking specifically for “That dress”. As we all know this past weekend was the long-anticipated Royal Wedding. Meghan Markle walked down the aisle in a Givenchy dress to her new husband, Prince Harry. Social media has thrown their opinions on the royal gown, however, here at TUC, we don’t judge. There isn’t any shame in comparing though right? So let’s take a look at the three iconic royal weddings.
Lady Diana Spencer
When I think of Princess Diana, I always think about one thing first. Her beautiful never-ending train! (25 feet long to be exact). In the year she got married, her train was valued at £151,000! (Talk about making a statement). Every time I watch her entrance into the wedding, I can’t help but get chills. She wore an ivory silk taffeta and antique lace wedding gown. Her dress was designed by David and Elizabeth Emmanuel. When asked about the gown, they stated that Diana wanted something that would go down in history, yet something that she loved. The dress was definitely made with a lot of attention to detail, for example, her dress had hand embroiled sequins and 10,000 pearls! Her dress will forever be written in the books and continue to inspire future royal weddings.
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
Long beautiful lace sleeves, a classy v-neck, and a powerful train; these were the ingredients for a wedding dress that made a statement. The iconic dress was designed by Alexander Mcqueen and has inspired many copy-cat dresses for famous stores such as H&M. Not even joking, after their royal wedding practically all “Say Yes to The Dress” episodes had a bride that wanted a gown inspired by Catherine’s classy gown. Although her train was not as long as Diana’s, it was still a solid 9 feet long. And I know we all remember her sister Pippa carrying the train down the aisle for her.
Sometimes simplicity speaks louder than extravagant attire. Meghan Markle walked down the aisle in a Givenchy ivory silk dress, with an a-line structure and shoulder framing neckline. Her gown was sleek and classic. However, it was not the gown that caught spectators’ attention. It was the lovely accessories she wore with her gown. Her sparkling Cartier earrings were nice but did not compare to her Queen Mary diamond tiara. Lastly, the bride made a statement with her 16.4-foot long veil.
Congrats to Meghan and Harry ! Until the next royal wedding, this has been the battle of the gowns.
